Mutuality

This is a site about the Principle of Mutuality.

Or more specifically, it’s about exercising mutuality in all aspects of life.

This isn’t a site about religion, or spirituality, or business, or politics, although you’ll find sections devoted to all of these, as well as to the sporadically updated section about my journey with cancer and myasthenia gravis and even my science fiction writing.

They’re all connected.

This is a site about connections; about the interconnectedness of everything. It’s about acknowledging that nothing we do, no decision we make, is ever done in isolation. Whether personal or professional; whether in our family, our community, our country, or globally; there are always ramifications that extend in all directions, spreading like the proverbial ripples in a pond.

Exercising mutuality is about how successful we are, not just in recognizing those connections, but also in incorporating them into the choices we make and the actions we take.

We’re struggling to transform ourselves from a collection of territorial cultures into a global civilization. To be successful, we need to transform ourselves from a perspective of self-interest, or group interest, to one of universal interest.

This isn’t a site about political correctness. Respect is essential, but sometimes exercising mutuality requires us to be direct, even curt.

Nor is it a site about tolerance – at least not tolerance of what Desiderata author Max Ehrmann might have called “loud and aggressive persons.” They’re “vexations to the spirit.” Tolerance is not the same as appeasement. Those who attempt to suppress or contain the transformation we’re undergoing need to be encouraged, sometimes bluntly, to outgrow the fear that feeds their reticence.

This is a site about exercising our moral intuition. More, it’s about the evolution of that intuition in ways that we’ve never fully considered in the past. We’ve never had the need to.

Now we do.

Learning to apply mutuality to every aspect of our lives is essential to our survival, both individually and as a civilization.

Mutuality is about justice and compassion and equality. Those are challenging concepts. Exercising mutuality isn’t easy. We’ll get it wrong. A lot.

That’s okay.

We need to acknowledge and celebrate the times we get it right.

And we need to acknowledge and learn from the times we get it wrong.

This site is one small place where I hope that we can do both.

It’s not a perfect site.

Nor am I in any way a perfect example of the Principle of Mutuality in action.

If perfection were required, we would all be in trouble.

What’s required is that we make the effort. And encourage others to do the same.

I hope that you’ll take the time to take a look around; to make a suggestion or two about your own encounters with examples of mutuality in action; to leave a comment; or to engage in a conversation.
